The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Huron, Ohio, merchant. Having emigrated in 1824 to Huron from Tonawanda, N.Y., John B. Wilbor joined with partners N.M. and Charles Standart in 1832 to operate a commission business and general mercantile firm, Wilbor & Co. (later Standart & Wilbor?).
